The name suggests just oil-fields and desert? Wrong! The largest of the Emirates is a ‘sleeping giant’ in the Middle East tourism stakes. Its capital of the same name is cool and contemporary, with some of Arabia’s most striking modern architecture. Large gardens and parks, green boulevards, state-of-the-art communications and transport, the presence of international luxury hotel chains (most with their own beaches or beach clubs), shopping plazas displaying some of the world’s most exclusive and duty-free goods, cultural centres and events . . . These all deliver a one-of-a-kind holiday experience.
The Old Souk and Batin area of the city provide a glimpse into another older and traditional Abu Dhabi. 100 miles away is Al Ain, the stunningly green Garden City of the Emirates, and a definite Abu Dhabi ‘must see’. Breathe the air of luxury that fills every corner of this serene paradise.
Abu Dhabi Adventure
‘Wadi-bashing’ is an Abu Dhabi adventure sports favourite. Wadis (dry riverbeds that follow the course of seasonal streams and rivers through rocky valleys) abound in the desert and their twisted routes are perfect for 4x4 driving. Dune-driving is another exciting option while organised desert safaris offer a more reflective desert experience. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2006 is Abu Dhabi’s new indoor ski, snowboarding, and ice-skating centre.
Nightlife & Party with Locals
The main hotels have their own bars and, in some cases, nightclub. Outside, though, are a number of city nightclubs and bars – generally cheaper and open until the early hours. Stick to the hotels if you prefer your entertainment with alcohol!
Gourmet Cuisine & Dining Out
Abu Dhabi’s cosmopolitan flavour is matched by the city''''s many upscale restaurants with the highest standards of international cuisine. European choices range from Swiss to Mediterranean, Spanish to Greek and British to German. Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Korean restaurants are balanced by several American and Mexican options! The Corniche has some good dining options for local fare.
Worlds Best Scuba Dive Sites
The clear, tranquil waters of the Gulf are rich in a variety of exotic coral and marine life. They’re also peppered with old wrecks to add mystery to the adventure. The warm seas allow for diving year-round. Why not take a tour of the beautiful environment underwater?
World Class Golf Courses
Abu Dhabi is home to three quality courses. The Al Ghazal Golf Club is an 18-hole par 71 sand course. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club boasts a challenging 18-hole championship course and an 18-hole garden course whose back nine are floodlit for evening play. The Abu Dhabi Golf and Equestrian Club offer a 9-hole, 6,350 yard, par 70 floodlit course.
